Poverty Reduction Strategy - Background Information

The Poverty Reduction Strategy Working Group was established on December 13, 2007, with the passing of Bill 94 in the Legislature.

The working group met bi-weekly between January and June 2008 to develop its recommendations and presented them to the Ministers of Community Services and Labour and Workforce Development.

On June 26, 2008 the Poverty Reduction Strategy Working Group handed government its recomendations, the Poverty Reduction Working Group Report (PDF), on how to best tackle poverty in the province.

The government’s Poverty Reduction Strategy interdepartmental committee began meeting in July, 2008 to move forward on the development of the strategy.

As part of the development of the strategy government also held a series of public consultations between November and March 2008.

The working group released their report in June 2008. Government released its Poverty Reduction Strategy in April 2009.
