HEALTH--PHYSICIAN RECRUITED TO GLACE BAY
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The community of Glace Bay will soon be welcoming a new
physician, Dr. Tom Crawford.

Dr. Crawford, a native of Saint John, N.B., attended Acadia
University and received his medical degree from Dalhousie
University. He has just completed a fellowship in addiction
medicine at McMaster University. Dr. Crawford will be starting
family practice in Glace Bay Sept. 1.

Dr. Andrei Techernov, currently working as a locum in the
emergency department at Glace Bay General Hospital, will be
staying on permanently with the hospital. Dr. Techernov graduated
with distinction from Moscow University Sechenov's Medical
School, Russia and has recently completed his residency at
Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, University of Buffalo, New
York.

"We are pleased Dr. Crawford will be opening a practice in Glace
Bay and that Dr. Techernov will be remaining," said Frank Peters,
physician recruitment coordinator. "The recruitment of these
physicians was a result of a joint effort between the Medical
Society of Nova Scotia and the Department of Health with
assistance from the medical community of Glace Bay in particular
Drs. Neil McVicker and John Rogers," Mr. Peters said.

Since September 1995, the recruitment initiative of the medical
society and the department of health, along with the assistance
of Nova Scotia communities, has resulted in 17 positions being
filled across the province -- seven have been under the incentive
package, with 10 physicians having been placed in non-incentive
areas.
