EDUCATION/CULTURE--TONY JOHNSTONE'S SCHOLARSHIP WINNER ANNOUNCED
-----------------------------------------------------------------
A combination of outstanding academic achievement and active
involvement in student and community affairs has resulted in
Marguerite Ntiamoa of Westville, Pictou County, being chosen as
this year's recipient of the Dr. P. Anthony Johnstone Memorial
Fund Entrance Scholarship.

Ms. Ntiamoa, a recent graduate of West Pictou District High
School, was selected from more than 100 applicants from across
the province.

This $5,000 scholarship honours the life and work of the late
Tony Johnstone, a long-time educator and human rights advocate in
Nova Scotia, who devoted his life to promoting multicultural
understanding and social equality. It is the largest university
entrance award offered by the province.

"The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage young people to
educate themselves on human rights issues in Canada, so that they
can continue bringing about the social change Dr. Johnstone
worked so hard to achieve," said Education and Culture Minister
Robbie Harrison. "The scholarship requires academic excellence,
but also looks at the student's leadership abilities and
contribution to cultural and youth activities during their high
school years. Ms. Ntiamoa's achievements easily meet these
criteria."

Applicants are also required to submit an essay on
multiculturalism and human rights issues in Canada. The selection
committee makes its decision based on this essay and a
combination of academic, non-academic and leadership criteria.

Recipients of this award must plan on immediately entering their
first year of a bachelor's degree program at a Maritime
university. Ms. Ntiamoa will study at Acadia University.

Rev. Trevor Phillips, chair of the selection committee and close
personal friend of the late Dr. Johnstone, presented the award to
Ms. Ntiamoa.

Students eligible to apply for next year's Tony Johnstone
Scholarship may obtain application forms from their school
guidance counsellors in February. The application deadline is
April 30, 1997.
