ECONOMIC RENEWAL AGENCY--EXPORT ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

The Nova Scotia Economic Renewal Agency honoured 10 of Nova
Scotia's leading exporters at the annual dinner of the Nova
Scotia
division of the Alliance of Manufacturers and Exporters Canada (a
partnership between the former Canadian Manufacturers'
Association
and the Canadian Exporters' Association), Friday. 

Presenting the annual export achievement awards at Inn on the
Lake,
Waverley, Economic Renewal Minister Robert Harrison said the
recipients of this year's awards reflect the diversity of the
Nova
Scotia economy.

ATheir areas of expertise range from exporting seaweed to selling
rail cars,@ Mr. Harrison said. AThey share success in selling
Nova
Scotia quality to the rest of the world. Nova Scotia companies
are
looking to trade with the world and that means jobs at home.@

Based on reported export sales for 1995, the awards were
presented
to:

-Acadian Seaplants Ltd., a company based in Dartmouth, with
plants
in Yarmouth, Toney River, Port Saxon and Charlesville. The
company
was established in 1961 and is now a major producer of seaweed
extracts which it exports world wide. Total exports in 1995 for
value added products were $6,500,000 not including unprocessed
seaweed. Acadian Seaplants received the award for new markets; in
1995 it entered the Japanese market with a line of cultivated
edible seaweeds.

-Composites Atlantic is located in Lunenburg. The company started
in 1987 and now employs 45 people. It is a Nova Scotia ISO 9000
company. It produces plastic composite products, including
thermoplastic, filament wound and pressure vessels. A member of
the
Nova Scotia Aerospace Association, Composites Atlantic received
the
award for new product. The company exported over $3 million in
advanced composites and aircraft parts including a unique
aircraft
de-icer.

-de Romilly & de Romilly, a Halifax based company was established
in 1993 and employs three people. It provides consultants and
professional services in areas of environmental law and policy,
national parks management, oil spill contingency planning,
environmental management systems, ISO 14000 implementation,
labour
law, etc. It is the recipient of the export of services award;
the
company having successfully secured four service contracts in the
highly competitive international financial institution market.
(Fiji, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago).

-Habitations International (Interhabs Ltd.), with a head office
in
Halifax, and a plant in Hubbards was established in 1975. This
company employs 25, producing prefabricated houses and buildings. 
Habitations received the award for increased sales under $2
million. The company has exported for 15 years. In 1995 it
reported
a seven-fold increase over 1994 with sales as far away as Korea.

-Stora Forest Industries Ltd. Located in Point Tupper and
established in 1959, Stora presently employs 850 people. The
company produces paper, newsprint, woodpulp of paper grade.
Stora received the largest increase in export sales award. In
1995,
it reported an increase in Export sales in excess of $100
million.
The company received an award in 1994 for Long Time Exporter.

-Trentonworks Ltd.,located in Trenton, was established in 1913.
The
company is ISO 9000 registered. It produces rail cars as well as
general/specialty metal fabricated products and employs 500.
Trentonworks received the long time exporter award. It has
exported
for more than 25 years, with its biggest market in the United
States, valued at about $40 million. It also has markets in
Argentina, Norway and Taiwan.

-Julimar Lumber Company Ltd., Brookfield, Colchester County.
Established in 1993 specifically to supply Nova Scotia lumber to
the Middle East. It employs 60 people. It is the recipient of the
increased sales over $2 million award. Julimar's 1995 sales were
$5
million, compared with $400,000 in 1994. Markets: Dubai, Kuwait,
Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

-King Metal Fabricators Ltd. of Dartmouth was established in 1986
and now employs nine people. King Metal produces ornamental and
speciality metal products. In 1990, it developed the Myers waste
oil storage system for the storage of waste petroleum products,
which has been accepted by the U.S. government and resulted in a
3
year contract. The resulting sale of 45 of these units has firmly
established King Metal as an exporter. It received the increased
sales under $500,000 award.

-Pelagos Atlantic Ltd., Dartmouth was established in 1995.
Pelagos
provides services in seafloor mapping, geophysical and
oceanographic Services, Windows-based real-time navigation,
integration and vessel management. The company has seven
employees.
It received the first time export of services award. The company
exported to three diverse markets -the Cameroon, the
U.S. and Europe. Products are as diverse as marine surveys and
positioning seabed mapping and software.


-Pure Energy Battery Corp., was established in Amherst in 1994.
The
company produces a range of rechargeable alkaline batteries and
battery chargers. It was give the first time exporter award and
its
products were sent to Germany, Spain, Japan, Korea, New Zealand
and
Malaysia. Total exports were $761,600.
