PUBLIC PROSECUTION SERVICE--CROWNS HIRED

The director of the Public Prosecution Service, Jerry Pitzul has
announced the appointment of two Crown attorneys.

Mr. Pitzul said Jean Whalen will work in the Halifax region and
Dan MacRury will assume responsibilities in the Cape Breton
region.

Ms. Whalen, a native of Dartmouth, is a graduate of Saint Mary's
University and Dalhousie Law School, Halifax. She was admitted to
the bar in 1985. She was in private practice from 1985-89, she
worked for the City of Dartmouth Department of Social Services
from 1988-89 and was a Crown attorney in Halifax-Dartmouth from
1989-92. Since then she has taught at the Nova Scotia Community
College in Dartmouth, and served as a per diem and contract Crown
attorney in the Halifax region. Ms. Whalen began her new position
May 15.

Mr. MacRury, a native of Sydney, has been with Nova Scotia Legal
Aid since 1989 and before that was in private practice. He was
admitted to the bar in 1986. He is a graduate of St. Francis
Xavier University in Antigonish and the University of New
Brunswick Law School in Fredericton. He begins his new duties
July 2.

Mr. Pitzul said the new Crown attorneys bring a wealth of
experience to their new positions that will ensure justice is
effectively and fairly addressed.

"I am extremely pleased with both of these appointments and I
look forward to working closely with them to continue the high
level of professionalism within the Public Prosecution Service."

The Crown attorneys were chosen following a competition.
