EDUCATION/CULTURE--CALL CENTRE TRAINING FACILITY OPENING
------------------------------------------------------------
The new call centre training facility at the Halifax Campus
of the Nova Scotia Community College, designed to train Nova
Scotians for an expanding sector of the economy, will be
officially opened Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 10:30 a.m.
The college developed the state-of-the-art facility in
partnership with Maritime Tel and Tel to serve existing
industry and as a key component to attract call centre
business and investment to the province.
Included in the facility at the Bell Road campus are 20
networked workstations, with Telemagic software running on
Compaq Deskpro 450 computers, and a centrex telephone
system with automatic call distribution. Any call centre
function can be conducted from the facility.
The Halifax Campus is providing customized call centre agent
training and has introduced a core training program in call
centre management with 18 students currently enrolled.
Allister Thorne, principal of the Halifax Campuses, said the
opening highlights the strategic alliance between the
Halifax Campuses and MT&T and their joint response to the
needs of the call centre industry in Nova Scotia. "It also
demonstrates the strong linkage between the College and the
business community, and the training support we can provide
organizations of all sizes."
Among the officials participating in the ceremony will be
Education and Culture Minister John MacEachern, Economic
Renewal Minister Robbie Harrison, Denis Connor, MT&T
vice-president marketing, and John Keating,
vice-president-extension services, Nova Scotia Community
College.
Also in attendance will be members of a program advisory
committee of industry professionals who will provide advice
on curriculum content and related program requirements.
The call centre industry is an expanding employer in Nova
Scotia, with a number of call centres planning expansion and
others scheduled to open this year, including the CIBC call
centre in Halifax.
