Apply for a homeowner’s supplement: Canada-Nova Scotia Targeted Housing Benefit

The Canada-Nova Scotia Targeted Housing Benefit helps homeowners stay in their home if they pay more than 50% of their pre-tax (gross) household income on housing costs (like mortgage and utilities). Supplements are up to $200 per month.

Apply online for help with housing costs.

The Canada-Nova Scotia Targeted Housing Benefit provides homeowners with a monthly supplement to help with housing costs (like mortgage and utilities). As long as you’re eligible, you continue getting the homeowner supplement.

Homeowner supplement calculation

The amount you get each month for the homeowner supplement is based on:

  • your total pre-tax (gross) household income
  • housing costs (like mortgage payments, property taxes, condominium fees, utilities and property insurance)

If your household income changes, your homeowner supplement won’t change until you renew the supplement next year.

Eligibility

You can apply for the homeowner supplement if you meet all of the following criteria:

  • you spend more than 50% of your pre-tax (gross) household income on housing costs (like mortgage, utilities and property taxes)
  • you live in Nova Scotia
  • you’re a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • you have a pre-tax (gross) household income below the current household income limits for the housing benefit
  • you own your own home
  • you live in the home as your primary residence
  • your home is assessed for property tax purposes at less than $360,000 in Halifax Regional Municipality and East Hants or $280,000 in other regions of Nova Scotia

You can’t apply for the homeowner supplement if you or someone in your household owes money to the Department of Growth and Development or the Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency and haven’t arranged repayment.

You can continue to receive the homeowner supplement if you’re eligible and complete a renewal form each year.
