Service Nova Scotia - Registry of Motor Vehicles

Temporary (Vehicle) Permit 
[30 Days]

Who Needs This Licence?
Anyone wishing to operate a non-registered vehicle on a public road in Nova Scotia.

(For example, while they are waiting for transfer of ownership documents, etc.)

Note:

Effective January 1, 2004, any time a temporary permit is issued insurance information is required. A Statement of Insurance form must be completed. For more information, click here.

The vehicle must have a valid safety inspection sticker.

Application Forms & Process:

For information on Identification Requirements, please visit the Registry of Motor Vehicles website.

1)  You can fill out an application form when you come to the office to apply. 

2)  If you are applying for yourself, you will have to provide: 

(a)  the vehicle description [make, model, year and serial number];
(b)  some proof that you own the vehicle, and
(c)  completed Statement of Insurance form.
(d)  valid safety inspection

3)  Although it is not often done, you can send in your application by mail.  The requirements are the same. 

4)  If you are applying on behalf of someone else, you must bring with you a letter signed by the owner of the vehicle, which includes the applicant's name, address and master number, the vehicle description [make, model, year and serial number], and gives you permission to apply for a permit on their behalf. You will also have to provide some proof that that person owns the vehicle, valid safety inspection and a completed Statement of Insurance form.

Expiry & Renewal:
This permit is valid for 30 days from date of issue.

Payment at counter:  cash, Interac debit card, Visa, MasterCard or American Express credit card, cheque or money order made out to the Registry of Motor Vehicles. 

Payment by mail:  please pay by cheque or money order made out to the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Additional Information:
1) Under certain conditions, you can get this permit even if the vehicle is not registered in your name. For example;
  • You come in to register a vehicle, but there is a problem with some of your paperwork., and you can’t do it right away. So you use this permit until you can get the vehicle properly registered. 
  • For further details, contact a regional office. (see Where can you get...., above)
2)  Temporary permits are not issued to commercial vehicles in excess of 5000 kg.
3)  When you see the term "Master Number" or "Client Master Number" on an application form, it refers to the number on your Driver's Licence under the heading "Master".  This 14-digit number is made up of (a) the first 5 letters of your last name [if your last name has fewer than 5 letters, the difference is made up with spaces]; (b) plus the day / month / year of your birth; (c) plus 3 computer-assigned numbers.
For example: FINCH--220867001 [5 letters (Finch) + 22 (for 22nd) + 08 (for August, 8th month of the year) + 67 (for 1967) + 001 (3 computer-assigned numbers) ]
For master numbers assigned to a group of individuals (joint ownership), the last 9 digits are computer-assigned.
