Pesticide (Use or Storage) Approval

Who Needs This Approval?
  1. Anyone who wants to apply a pesticide:

    • on forested land ( Note : "forested land" includes, but is not limited to, land used for the production of pulp, sawlogs, lumber or firewood, but does not include land used to grow Christmas trees);

    • on a utility corridor or utility right-of-way, excluding spot treatment ( Note : "spot treatment" means the application of a pesticide to an area which does not exceed 100 square metres); and the direct application of wood preservatives to utility poles;

    • on a road, street, or highway, excluding spot treatment

    • on an industrial or commercial site for soil sterilization ( Note : "soil sterilization" means use of a non-selective herbicide which provides residual control of plants for a period of time exceeding 6 months);

    • in, on or over a surface watercourse; or

    • from any aircraft in flight.

  2. Anyone who wants to construct a new pesticide storage facility or extend or modify an existing pesticide storage facility to store commercial or restricted class pesticides for sale, resale, or wholesale distribution.
Note: A certificate is not required for homeowners applying domestic class pesticides.

Application Forms & Process:
You can get an application form for this Approval from any Regional or District Office of the Department.  After it has been completed, it is submitted, along with the appropriate fee. When the Department receives an application, staff review it to see if all the required information is on the form, and if the required supporting information has been provided.  If not, the application package is returned with an explanation as to what is missing.

Once an application has been accepted by the Department as complete, the application form and supporting documentation undergo a technical review and evaluation.   This is to decide if the activity being proposed meets the minimum standards, policies, guidelines, procedures and regulations that are administered by the Department.

If an applicant fails to meet these criteria, staff will tell them which specific criteria have not been met to the satisfaction of the Department.

This Approval will list any terms and conditions which the applicant must satisfy.
Waiting Period:
Pesticide Storage Initial Approval: 60 business days or less
Pesticide Storage Renewal: 10 business days
Pesticide Use Approvall: 60 business days or less
Provided that all the items that must accompany the application have been received
Expiry & Renewal:
The approval is valid from the date of issue to December 31 of the same year.  It can be renewed.  Note:  It is the responsibility of Approval holder to contact the Department before it expires; NO NOTICE of renewal will be sent out by the Department.
Price: (No tax is charged)
Initial Application and Annual Renewal:
  1. All categories except forestry:
    • Up to 20 hectares (49.5 acres): $128.80
    • Each additional hectare: $5.15

  2. Forestry:
    • Up to 6 hectares (14.8 acres): $64.40
    • Each additional hectare: $5.15
Please make cheque or money order payable to the Minister of Finance.
Related Requirements:
If you are applying a commercial restricted or agricultural class pesticide, you are required to hold a pesticide applicators certificate of qualification in the class applicable to that work carried out.
Additional Information:
A certificate is not required for homeowners applying domestic class pesticides. Any approval amendments involving additional area must be submitted as a new approval application.
