Modification of Biomedical and International Waste Treatment Facility

Description

On July 14, 2008, Stericycle, Inc. (Medical Waste Management Inc.) submitted an Environmental Assessment Registration Document for the proposed Modification of Biomedical Waste Treatment Facility in Burnside Industrial Park, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

The purpose of the proposed undertaking is to transfer and treat "yellow bag" biomedical waste, generated in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island, at Stericycle's existing facility in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. As well, Stericycle proposes to transfer dental waste in the Atlantic Provinces to an approved recycling facility within Nova Scotia. The proposed project will commence upon receipt of the applicable approvals and authorizations. Under the Environmental Assessment Regulations, a permanent commercial facility for the handling of waste dangerous goods is defined as a Class 1 undertaking under the Environmental Assessment Regulations.

Minister's Decision

On August 8, 2008 the Minister of Environment released a decisionPDF Download Link (PDF:319k) concerning this review. The Minister has decided to approve the undertaking in accordance with Section 13(1)b of the Environmental Assessment Regulations, pursuant to Part IV of the Environment Act. The proponent is required to obtain all other necessary approvals, permits or authorizations before commencing work on the undertaking.

Opportunities for Public Input

Public comments were accepted between July 14 and July 28, 2008. Comments submitted are available in the library on the 5th floor of the Department of Environment and Climate Change, Halifax Office.
