Wetland Management Plans for Bowater

Fall 1993

Two years ago, the Province of Nova Scotia and Bowater-Mercey Paper Company Ltd. signed a memorandum of agreement. Nova Scotia is committed to wetland habitat protection and is an active partner in the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture (EHJV). Bowater wants to participate in wetland conservation and management on its own lands to benefit wetlands and wildlife.

Don Downe, Minister of Lands and Forestry, presented Bowater president Donald MacNeil with four wetland management plans for the Bowater districts of St. Margaret's Bay, Medway, Sissiboo-Tusket and South Shore-Rossignal.

"This program and these plans offer new hope that business and government will continue to work hand-in-hand to improve the environment."
- Mr. Downe

The EHJV identified all wetlands on the Bowater property. abd the Province provided individual management plans for Bowater's four districts. These plans are a first in Canada, showing how responsible stewardship can play a critical role in preserving Natural Resources.
