Limited ATV Access for Hunters in Wilderness Area

JANUARY 2001
Date of Post: July 2003

Since 1990, hunting of Moose in the Pollett Cove-Aspy Fault Wilderness Area to the north of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park has increased greatly. The Nova Scotia Department of Environment & Labour (DOE&L) will allow the limited use of ATVs in this area, but only on designated trails. Some trails are available for access to hunting areas, and others - haul only trail are available only for the retrieval and transportation of downed moose. A number of other existing (but unauthorized) trails in the area have been closed on environmental grounds. DNR, in conjunction with local registered guides, undertook the initial signage of the trails. Hunters with a valid DNR Moose license must apply to DOE&L for a permit to use ATVs on these trails before taking a vehicle into the area. No other motor vehicles are allowed in any Wilderness Area at any time without a permit.
