The Wildfire Management Group conducts education programs to increase public awareness of the prevention and hazards of wildfire. Much of this activity focuses on practical steps that people can take to reduce the threat posed by forest fires. We often partner with local fire departments to deliver this message.

As of April 1, burning permits are required in the counties of Queens, Shelburne, Yarmouth, Digby, Annapolis, Kings and Lunenburg. Permits are required in all other counties beginning April 15. Fire season continues through to Oct. 15.

You must have a burning permit before you start a fire within 305 metres (1000 feet) of a forested area.

Prevention is the best way to reduce the occurences of forest fires.

The fire weather index is posted daily on the department's website during fire season.
