LABOUR FORCE SURVEY - FEBRUARY 2017

In Nova Scotia February 2017 (seasonally-adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force decreased 1.1% (-5,500) from January 2017 to 485,000 and decreased 0.8% (-3,800) over February 2016.
  • Employment decreased 1.5% (-6,800) from January 2017 to 445,900 and increased 0.4% (+1,700) over February 2016.
  • Unemployment increased 3.2% (+1,200) from January 2017 to 39,100 and decreased 12.3% (-5,500) over February 2016.
  • Unemployment rate increased 0.4 percentage points from January 2017 to 8.1%.


In Canada February 2017 (seasonally-adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force decreased 0.1%  (+23,000) from January 2017 to 19.6 million and increased 0.9% (+174,500) over February 2016.
  • Employment increased 0.1% (+15,300) from January 2017 to 18.3 million and increased 1.6% (+288,100) over February 2016.
  • Unemployment decreased 2.9% (-38,300) from January 2017 to 1.3 million and decreased 8.1% (-113,600) over February 2016.
  • Unemployment rate decreased 0.2 percentage points from January 2017 to 6.6%.


In Halifax February 2017 (3 month moving average, seasonally adjusted):

  • Labour force decreased 0.4% (-1,000) from January 2017 to 239,400 and remained virtually unchanged (+100) over February 2016.
  • Employment decreased 0.5% (-1,200) from January 2017 to 224,900 and increased 0.7% (+1,500) over February 2016.
  • Unemployment increased 1.4% (+200) from January 2017 to 14,500 and decreased 8.8% (-1,400) over February 2016.
  • Unemployment rate increased 0.2 percentage points from January 2017 to 6.1%.
