August 19, 2014US HOUSING STARTS AND BUILDING PERMITS, JULY 2014 US housing starts increased 15.7 per cent in July compared to the revised June estimate to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,093,000 and is 21.7 per cent above the the July 2013 estimate. Single-family unit structures increased 8.3 per cent from the previous month and are 10.1 per cent higher than a year ago. Housing starts for structures with at least five units are up 33.0 per cent from the previous month and up 49.5 per cent from the previous year.
Year-to-date (January-July ) US housing starts have averaged 980,000 (seasonally adjusted annual rate), an 8.3 per cent increase from January-July 2013. All four regions have higher year-to-date housing starts: Northeast (+18.3%), Midwest (+14.2%), South (+5.0%), and West (+7.4%).
US residential construction permits, a leading indicator of new construction, increased 8.1 per cent in July to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,052,000 and are 7.7 per cent higher in comparison to July 2013. Year-to-date (January-July ) US housing permits have averaged 1,006,000, up 3.3 per cent from the average for the same period last year.
