April 17, 2014EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE FEBRUARY 2014 In February 2014, the seasonally adjusted number of Nova Scotians receiving regular EI benefits decreased by 380 persons (-1.4%) from January to 26,550, and decreased by 2,500 persons (-8.6%) over February 2013.
In February 2014, the seasonally adjusted number of Canadians receiving regular EI benefits increased by 2,820 persons (0.6%) from January to 506,470 and declined by 25,880 persons (-4.9%) over February 2013.
Looking closer at the breakdown of recipients in Nova Scotia, February 2014 saw decreases in all age groups year over year (15 to 24 decreased by 500 persons, 25-54 by 1,810 persons, and 55 and over by 190 persons). In February, 9.9 percent of regular recipients were in the 15 to 24 age group, 64.3 percent were in the 25 to 54 age group, and 25.8 percent were in the 55 years and over age group.
In February 2014, no county in Nova Scotia saw increases on a year over year basis. The counties with the most recipients (also the largest counties), Halifax and Cape Breton, both saw declines on a year over year basis. Halifax had 5,850 recipients in February, 5.9 percent lower than a year earlier, and Cape Breton had 6,290 recipients in February 2014, 7.0 percent lower than a year earlier. Note: county level data are not seasonally adjusted). Halifax county represented 17.6 percent of Nova Scotia recipients this month, and Cape Breton county accounted for 19.0 percent of recipients this month.
