April 16, 2014NON-RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION INVESTMENT 1ST QUARTER 2014 In the first quarter of 2014, non-residential building construction declined 7.4 per cent from the last quarter of 2013 (seasonally adjusted). Compared with the same quarter in 2013, non-residential building construction is down 6.6 per cent. This decline appears to be concentrated in Halifax non-residential construction, which declined by over 10 per cent.
Results across the country have been mixed, with some provinces growing while others recede. On balance, 2014Q1 non-residential building construction in Canada is down 0.6 per cent from 2013Q4 and up 0.7 per cent from 2013Q1.
The year-over-year and quarterly declines in non-residential building construction activity in Nova Scotia are primarily attributable to falling commercial sector investments. Industrial, institutional and government sector investments have stabilized in the last quarter, though government/institutional investment has rebounded since 2013Q2.
Halifax appears to be the main source of volatility in commercial sector building construction.
Canadian non-residential building construction by sector has been less volatile, with stable institutional/government investment, falling industrial investment and growing commercial investments.
