EU AND EURO AREA CONSUMER PRICE INFLATION, AUGUST 2017

In August, annual inflation was 1.5 per cent in the Euro Area (up from 1.3 per cent in July) and 1.7 per cent in the European Union (up from 1.5 per cent in July). In August 2016, inflation in the Euro Area was 0.2 per cent and in the EU was 0.3 per cent.

The highest annual rates were recorded in Lithuania (4.6 per cent), Estonia (4.2 per cent), and Latvia (3.2 per cent).  The lowest rates were registered in Ireland (0.4 per cent), Cyprus (0.5 per cent), Greece and Romania (both 0.6%). 

The largest upward impacts to euro area annual inflation came from fuels for transport, accommodations services, and air transport. Telecommunication, vegetables, and social protection had the biggest downward impacts.
