Inflation in Japan edged up again to 0.4 per cent between April 2016 and April 2017. All items CPI inflation had been 0.2 per cent in February and March. Excluding food and energy, Japanese prices are declining, with the underlying index down 0.3 per cent on a year-over-year basis in April, the same as was reported for March.
As oil prices have recovered from the lows of early 2016, energy inflation is rising again - up 4.6 per cent compared with April 2016. Food price inflation continues to be modest, but it rose slightly to 0.9 per cent year-over-year in April.
Japanese inflation has been persistently below inflation reported in Canada and Nova Scotia for much of the last two years. Stabilizing energy prices are a global phenomenon and with it, inflation is returning across many advanced economies. However, Japan's inflation remains lower than the growth of the CPI in either Canada or Nova Scotia.
