NOVA SCOTIA GOODS EXPORTS AND EXPORTERS
Statistics Canada has created a new database that provides information on merchndise trade by Exporter characteristics.
Definition: "An enterprise is defined as the statistical unit that directs and controls the allocation of resources relating to its domestic operations, and for which consolidated financial statements are maintained. An establishment is defined as the statistical unit where the accounting data required to measure production is available. The two measures generate a different number of exporting units as well as a different industry allocation of these units." and, "The number of exporting enterprises corresponds to the number of exporting enterprises identified in the Business Register by the TEC – Goods program." In the period 2010 to 2014, Nova Scotia exported between $3.9 billion and $4.6 billion worth of goods to the international market. In this period the number of exporting establishments ranged from 921 to 980 exporters. The average value of exports ranged from $4.2 million to $4.7 million per exporter.
In 2014, the number of exporting establishments increased 6.4% to 980. The value of exports increased 12.1% to $4.6 billion.
The Provinces
In 2014, the average value of exports per exporter in Alberta was $22.9 million. In New Brunswick the average value of exports by exporter was $17.4 million. Newfoundland and Labrador also scored high with a $16.9 million average export value per exporter. The Canadian average was $9.7 million per exporter.
Exporters By Industry
In Nova Scotia 2014, the largest number of exporting establishments were in manufacturing industry. In 2014, 31% or 303 of Nova Scotia 980 exporters were in manufacturing. Next, the wholesale industry was the source of 27% of exporters (261), and Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing provided another 11% (108).
Retail trade industry (88) provided 9%, Transportation and warehousing (39) 4%, and Professional, Scientific (37) another 4%. THe balance of exporters came from 15 other industries, contributing 14% of exporters.
Value of Exports By Industry
In 2014, the Manufacturing industry was the source of 70% ($3.2 billion) of the value of Nova Scotia's international goods exports. The Wholesale industry made up 19% ($864 million) of our trade; Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing 3% ($143 million) and Professional, Scientific services another 3% ($132 million). The remaining 6% of export value ($270 million) was contributed by enterprises in the other 17 industries.
