CANADA GDP BY INDUSTRY, JULY 2016

Real GDP in Canada increased 0.5 per cent in July following an increase of 0.6 per cent in June. The rise in July followed a 0.6 per cent increase in June, which had essentially offset an equivalent decline in May.

Output of goods-producing industries increased 1.0 per cent per cent in July following an increase of 1.6 per cent in June.

There were increases across the agriculture, forestry and fishing (1.0 per cent), mining, oil and gas (3.9 per cent), utilities (0.5 per cent), and manufacturing (0.4 per cent).  GDP declined in the construction sector (-0.8 per cent).

Within the mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction sector, the non-conventional oil extraction industry subsector increased 19.3 per cent.  This followed an increase in June of 12.4 per cent.

Service-producing industries increased 0.3 per cent in July.  There were gains in thirteen of fifteen service-industries.  The largest increases in July were in accommodation and food services (1.4 per cent) and transportation and warehousing (1.1 per cent). There were declines in two industries: other services and public administration and no change in management of companies and enterprises.

Comparing the first seven months of 2016 (Jan-Jul) with the same period 2015, the Canadian economy is 1.4 per cent larger this year than last. Goods production is down 0.9 per cent with declines in construction (-3.8 per cent), utilities (-0.1%), Mining, quarrying and gas extraction (-2.2 per cent) offsetting higher agriculture, forestry, fishing (+3.7 per cent) and manufacturing (+1.1 per cent). Services production is up 2.3 per cent on increases in most subsectors except for a small decline in others services.
