TRADE BETWEEN ECONOMIC REGIONS IN CANADA

Statistics Canada has developed a new database that reports regional trade in goods across 30 greater economic regions (GERs). Nova Scotia has been allocated two GERs covering Cape-Breton-North Shore and Halifax, Southern NS, Annapolis Valley. Data is available for the period 2006 to 2012. The following is a brief analysis of  the top Cape-Breton-North Shore and Halifax, South NS and Annapolis Valley trade destinations and sources.

In 2012 the number one destination of Cape Breton-North Shore exports was the Halifax-Southern NS-Annapolis Valley GER. The region exported $298 million worth of goods to its Nova Scotia partner. The number two destination of Cape Breton GER goods was the Greater Montreal GER ($230 million). Number three destination was  the Central/Greater Toronto and Hamilton GER at $219 million.

Reciprocating the activity, in 2012 the number one destination of Halifax-Southern NS-Annapolis Valley GER exports was the Cape Breton-North Shore GER. The region exported $827 million worth of goods to its Nova Scotia partner. The number two destination of the Halifax GER goods ($511 million) was practically next door in the Northerm and Eastern New Brunswick GER.  Number three destination was  the Central/Greater Toronto and Hamilton GER at $431 million.

As with exports, the pattern of import trade is similar.  In 2012, Cape Breton-North Shore received $827 million worth of imported goods from its close provincial neighbour, the Halifax-Southern-Annapolis Valley GER. The Central/Greater Toronto-Hamilton GER was the number two source for $310 million in imports. Number three was close by, the Northern and Eastern New Brunswick GER, with $286 million worth of goods imports.

The pattern is broken with imports from the Central/Greater Toronto and Hamilton GER taking first rank with imports in the Halifax-Souther NS and Annapolis Valley GER receiving $750 million worth of goods. Norther and Eastern New Brunswick take second spot at $637 million. And the Greater Montreal GER takes third place ($542 million) way ahead of Cape Breton and North Shore  at $298 million.
