WHOLESALE TRADE, JUNE 2016

In June 2016, Nova Scotia's wholesale sales (seasonally adjusted) decreased 2.8 per cent over May 2016 to $756 million. This is down 5.2 per cent over June 2015, an example of the considerable volatility in sales among the Province's wholesale merchants from one month to the next. Canadian wholesale merchant sales increased 0.7 per cent in June over May to $56.4 billion and increased 3.2 percent over June 2015.  Monthly wholesale merchant sales were down in six province, and up in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia.

On a year-to-date basis (Jan-Jun 2016 vs Jan-Jun 2015), Nova Scotia's seasonally adjusted wholesale merchant sales have increased 4.1 per cent.   Wholesale merchant sales are down in  four provinces - Newfoundland, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

In Nova Scotia, the year-to-date (Jan-Jun 2016 vs Jan-Jun 2015) increase in wholesale trade is largely concentrated in food/beverage/tobacco products ($121.0 million), motor vehicles/parts ($53.9 million), and building materials ($60.0 million).  There were declines in Machinery, equipment and supplies (-$66.7 million).
