TERANET-NATIONAL BANK HOUSE PRICE INDEX, JANUARY 2016

In January 2016, house prices in Halifax were down 0.1 per cent on a month to month basis, with the Teranet-National Bank housing index falling to a level of 140.310. Compared to a year ago, January's prices are 2.0 per cent higher.  

In January 2016, the 6 City (Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal and Halifax) Composite Index and the 11-City (Ottawa, Toronto, Hamilton, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Victoria, Winnipeg, Montreal, Quebec City and Halifax) Composite Index both fell 0.1 per cent. Largest monthly increases were in Hamilton and Vancouver. Monthly declines occurred in six cities, the largest decline in Montreal (-1.2%). 

Year over year, the 6-City and 11-City indexes were up 6.5 per cent and 5.9 per cent, respectively. Year over year prices rose the most in Vancouver (12.5%). Year over year price declines occurred in Calgary (-2.6%), Ottawa (-2.0%) and Edmonton (-1.9%). 

January saw Halifax year over year prices rising by 2.0 per cent, lower than December's 2.6 per cent year over year increase. The six month moving average declined slightly in January.
