October 08, 2015CMHC PRELIMINARY HOUSING STARTS, SEPTEMBER 2015 In Nova Scotia, the seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing starts in all areas was 5,127 units in September 2015, up 47.4 per cent from August's revised estimate of 3,478. September 2015's estimate is an increase of 21.4 per cent over a year earlier. For the month, multi-unit urban starts increased 32.5 per cent while single-detached urban starts were up 93.3 per cent.
On a year-to-date basis, housing starts in Nova Scotia are 44.4 per cent higher for January-September 2015 compared to January-September 2014, averaging 4,393. Halifax had a seasonally adjusted annualized 3,664 housing starts in September 2015, up 64.7 per cent from the previous month and up 22.4 per cent from a year earlier.
In Canada, the seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing starts was 230,700 units in September 2015, up 7.7 per cent from the previous month, and 17.1 per cent above the level in September 2014. For the month, multi-unit urban starts increased 10.5 per cent while single-detached urban starts were up 0.8 per cent (note: Urban areas are defined as areas over 10,000 people).
On a year-to-date (Jan-September 2015 vs. Jan-September 2014) basis, housing starts are up 1.7 per cent in Canada with declines in all provinces except PEI, Nova Scotia, Ontario and BC. Nova Scotia's starts are 44.4 per cent higher from January to September 2015 over the same period a year ago.
