October 02, 2015US EMPLOYMENT, SEPTEMBER 2015 For the second month in a row, US employment growth has slowed substantially below its 12 month average pace. Payroll employment rose by just 142,000 in September, following a (revised) gain of 136,000 in August. September's employment growth was below the average monthly pace of 238,000 job gains in the 12 months up to August.
The US unemployment rate held at 5.1 per cent in September, largely due to a declining participation rate (62.4 per cent). The US employment-to-population ratio also slipped top 59.2 per cent.
Among major sectors, September employment growth was concentrated in health care (+34,000) professional/business services (+31,000), retail trade (+24,000), food services (+21,000) and information (+12,000). Mining employment continued to decline, falling by another 10,000 in September. Employment in manufacturing, construction, wholesale trade, transportation, finance and government sectors were little changed.
