US EMPLOYMENT, AUGUST 2015

US employment growth slowed to +173,000 in August, slower than the average pace of growth reported over the previous 12 months (+247,000).  

With a stable labour force participation rate at 62.6 per cent, the US unemployment rate fell to 5.1 per cent while the employment-to-population ratio was little changed at 59.4 per cent.  

Among major sectors, employment was up in health care and social assistance (+56,000) professional/business services (+33,000), food services (+26,000) and finance (+19,000).  Manufacturing employment fell by 17,000 and mining work was down by 9,000.  Employment in construction, wholesale/retail, transportation and government was little changed.
