CMHC PRELIMINARY HOUSING STARTS, JULY 2015

In Nova Scotia, the seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing starts in all areas was 6,124 units in July 2015, down 20.4 per cent from June's revised estimate of 7,695. up 0.9 per cent from the previous month's revised level of 7,627 (which was the highest since October of 2012). July 2015's estimate is an increase of 10.1 per cent over a year earlier. For the month, multi-unit urban starts decreased 29.3 per cent while single-detached urban starts increased 15.0 per cent.

On a year-to-date basis, housing starts in Nova Scotia are 61.0 per cent higher for January-July 2015 compared to January-July 2014, averaging 4,433. Halifax had a seasonally adjusted annualized 4,696 housing starts in July 2015, down 29.6 per cent from the previous month but up 5.7 per cent from a year earlier.

 

 

In Canada, the seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing starts was 193,032 units in July 2015, down 4.6 per cent from the previous month, and 5.1 per cent below the level in July 2014. For the month, multi-unit urban starts decreased 8.2 per cent while single-detached urban starts decreased 0.8 per cent.

On a year-to-date (Jan-July 2015 vs. Jan-July 2014) basis, housing starts are down 1.7 per cent in Canada with declines in all provinces except Nova Scotia, Ontario and BC. Nova Scotia's starts are 61.0 per cent higher from January to July 2015 over the same period a year ago.
