WHOLESALE TRADE, APRIL 2015



In April 2015, Nova Scotia's wholesale sales (seasonally adjusted) increased 10.3% over March 2015 to $772.4 million, and increased 5.1% from April 2014.  The wholesale merchants' sales index (Jan 2011=100) increased 11.2 points to 120.3 in April 2015.

In April 2015 Canadian wholesale sales (seasonally adjusted) increased 1.9% from March 2015 to $55.2 billion, and increased 6.7% from April 2014.  The wholesale merchants' sale index (Jan2011=100) increased 2.2 points to 118.6.

In April 2015 Nova Scotia, unadjusted year-to-date  Food, beverage and tobacco increased 17.2% (+$135.5 million) and kept wholesale trade sales in the black. Building Materials declined 6.0% (-$30.7 million), Motor vehicle and parts sales  declined 3.2% (-$13.9 million),  and Misc wholesale distributors declined 5.8% (-$13.0 million).

Nova Scotia year-to-date sales (unadjusted, Jan-Apr 2015 vs Jan-Apr 2014) increased 3.1% to $2.73 billion. Canada's year-to-date sales (unadjusted) increased 6.2% over the same period last year to $207.9 billion.

 

 

When one considers year-over-year change in wholesale trade, the month of April values show strong growth trends in Motor Vehicle and Parts dealers, up 80 points since 2009; Food beverage, tobacco distributors  increasing at a steady pace April over April (up 56 points since 2009; and a recent resergence in Machinery, Equipment and Supplies distributors up 40 points since 2013.  Misc. distributors were quick off the mark in 2010,  the first year after the recession, but demonstrated zero to flat growth to 2015. Farm-Personal-Household distributors, and Building material and supply distributors year-over-year growth was relatively flat over the April 2009 to April 2015 period.
