NOVA SCOTIA QUARTERLY POPULATION ESTIMATES AS OF OCTOBER 1, 2014

As of October 1, 2014, Nova Scotia's population is estimated to be 943,932, an increase of 1,264 persons (0.13%) over the revised July 1, 2014 estimate (942,668).  The last two quarters (and three of the last four) have shown population increases for the province.





Natural Increase (2,358 Births - 2,102 Deaths) over the quarter ending September 30 was a positive 256, in contrast to the past two quarters which showed net negative growth in this area.

Net interprovincial migration for the quarter ending September 30 was an outflow of 137 persons (3,871 interprovincial inmigrants, 4,008 interprovincial outmigrants). Immigration was 695, and emigration was 530. Net international migration (immigrants minus emigrants, plus returning emigrants, minus net temporary emigrants, plus net non-permanent residents) was a positive 1,145, heavily influenced by net non-permanent residents (801).  




Interprovincial migration data show that of those who left Nova Scotia over the quarter ending September 30, 2014, 1,345 left for Alberta and 1,127 left for Ontario. On the interprovincial inmigration side, Nova Scotia received 1,342 interprovincial migrants from Ontario and 807 from Alberta. The net result is net interprovincial migration of -137. Nova Scotia received positive net interprovincial migrants from Newfoundland and Labrador (+153), PEI (+83), New Brunswick (+109), Ontario (+215), and Manitoba (+26). 





Over the last four quarters, net interprovincial migration has totaled -782, with the majority of that going to Alberta (-2,615 on a net basis). Net positive contributions over the past four quarters came mainly from Ontario (+1,203).
