EU AND EURO AREA UNEMPLOYMENT RATE, OCTOBER 2014

In October 2014, the unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) in the European Union (EU28) was 10.0%, unchanged from September 2014. Compared with October 2013, unemployment declined by 0.7 percentage points (1.55 million persons) in EU28.

The Euro Area (EA18) unemployment rate in October 2014 was 11.5%, unchanged from September 2014, and down 0.4 percentage points (0.55 million persons) from October 2013.




Among Member States, the lowest unemployment rates were in Germany (4.9%) and Austria (5.1%), and the highest in Greece (25.9% in August 2014) and Spain (24.0%).

In October 2014, the youth (persons under age 25) unemployment rate was 21.6% in the EU28 and 23.5% in the EA 18, compared with 23.3% and 24.0%, respectively a year ago.


Note: Eurostat defines unemployment persons as individuals aged 15 to 74, who are without work and have actively sought employment at some time during the previous four weeks.
