ELEMENTARY-SECONDARY EDUCATION SURVEY FOR CANADA, THE PROVINCES AND TERRITORIES, 2012/2013

There are over 5 million students were enrolled in elementary and secondary public school programs in Canada during the 2012/2013 school year, including both regular programs and upgrading programs for adults and vocational programs. Nationally, with the annual decrease in enrollment from 2008/2009 to 2012/2013, there are 57,540 fewer students (a decline of 1.1%) enrolled in elementary and secondary public school programs as compared to 2008/2009. In Nova Scotia, a total reduction of 7.9% is observed over the five-year period with an approximately 2% decline each year.



From an overall point of view, the number of public school graduates who obtained a secondary school diploma increased 2.7% from 2008/2009 to 354,290 in 2012/2013 at the Canada level. After an increase in 2009/2010, the number of public school graduates went down for the following two years before the rise in 2012/2013. In Nova Scotia, the number of graduates in public school decreased annually over the last five-year period from 10,296 in 2008/2009 to 9,552 in 2012/2013 with the most notable drop of 3.0% in 2011/2012.



In terms of second language programs enrollment, an annual increase was reported in Alberta as compared to 2011/2012 despite the declining pattern nationally. From 2008/2009 to 2012/2013, the national enrolments in second language programs decreased 6.1% with Saskatchewan (-22.8%) posting the largest decline. While second language immersion programs enrollment saw an increase of 4.6% from 2011/2012 to 2012/2013 at the Canada level, with an total increase of 17.4% over the five-year period. Nationally, enrolments in minority language programs went down 1.3% as compared to 2008/2009.
