WHOLESALE TRADE, AUGUST 2014




In August 2014, Nova Scotia's wholesale sales (seasonally adjusted) declined 0.9% from July 2014 to $749 million, and increased 8.8% from August 2013. The wholesale merchants' sales index (Jan 2011=100) decreased 1.0 points to 116.7 in August 2014.

In August 2014, Canadian wholesale sales (seasonally adjusted) were up 0.2% from July 2014 to $53.1 billion, and increased 6.0% from a year ago. The wholesale merchants' sale index (Jan 2011=100) increased 0.1 points to 114.1.

On a year-to-date basis, Nova Scotia’s unadjusted sales were up 3.9% over Jan-Aug 2013 to $5.7 billion. Canada's year-to-date sales (unadjusted) increased 5.0% over Jan-Aug 2013 to $411.9 billion.





In Jan-Aug 2014 Nova Scotia, unadjusted year-to-date Machinery and Equipment sales increased 14.6% ($130.9 million) and Food, Beverage and Tobacco sales increased 12.9% ($204.9 million). These gains were partially offset by decline in the unadjusted year-to-date Motor Vehicle and Parts sales by12.7% ($121.3 million).



Regionally, the highest year-to-date wholesale sales growth was registered in Prince Edward Island (+11.8%), Newfoundland and Labrador (+9.4%) and Manitoba (+8.8%). The lowest year-to-date growth was observed in Quebec (+1.0%), Saskatchewan (+1.6%) and New Brunswick (+3.5%).
