US HOUSING STARTS AND BUILDING PERMITS, SEPTEMBER 2014

US housing starts increased 6.3 per cent in September compared to the revised August estimate to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,017,000 and are 17.8 per cent above the September 2013 estimate. Single-family unit structures increased 1.1 per cent from the previous month and are 11.0 per cent higher than a year ago. Housing starts for structures with at least five units were up 18.5 per cent from the previous month and are up 30.3 per cent compared to last September.

Year-to-date (January-September) US housing starts have averaged 978,100 (seasonally adjusted annual rate), an 8.9 per cent increase from January-September 2013. All four regions have higher year-to-date housing starts: Northeast (+17.8%), Midwest (+11.5%), South (+6.7%), and West (+8.0%).



US residential construction permits, a leading indicator of new construction, increased 1.5 per cent in September to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,018,000 and are 2.5 per cent higher in comparison to September 2013. Year-to-date (January-September) US housing permits have averaged 1,007,000, an increase of 3.5 per cent from the average for the same months last year.
