BUILDING PERMITS SEPTEMBER 2013

In Nova Scotia, the value of building permits issued decreased 2.8 percent in September 2013 from August 2013. The total value of building permits in September 2013 was $92.3 million (seasonally adjusted), 35.9 percent lower than September of last year. The value of residential permits were down 8.7 percent compared to August 2013 and down 31.4 percent compared to September 2012. Non-residential permits were up 9.8 percent compared to August 2013 and down 42.6 percent compared to September 2012.

On average over the nine months of 2013 compared to the first nine months of last year, total value of building permits are down 19.4 percent (-$232.3 million). Year-to-date, residential permits fell 13.8 percent (-$103.8 million) and non-residential permits are down 28.6 percent (-$128.5 million). On a year-to-date basis, permit values are down for single (-25.6%) and apartments (-23.5%). On a year-to-date basis, the value of building permits for all three non-residential components are down: Industrial (-25.8%), Commercial (-23.6%), and Institutional and governmental (-40.0%).



In Canada, building permits increased 1.7 percent in September over August to $6.5 billion (seasonally adjusted); 0.2 percent higher than September 2012. In September 2013, residential permits were up 3.3 percent from the previous month but 2.9 percent lower than the previous year. Non-residential permits were down 0.8 percent compared to August 2013 and 5.9 percent higher than September 2012.

In Canada, over the first nine months of 2013 compared to the first nine months of last year, the total value of building permits are down 1.4 percent (-$867.2 million) with a decline in residential permits of 3.6 percent (-$1.33 billion) and an increase in non-residential permits of 2.0 percent (+$463.0 million).
