POLICE REPORTED CRIME STATISTICS 2012

Statistics Canada has released updated crime statistics for 2012. Nova Scotia's overall rate of police-reported crime was 7,105 incidents per 100,000 population, a 2.8 per cent reduction from 2011 crime rates. Of these, there were 1,365 incidents of violent criminal code violations reported per 100,000 residents. This rate is down 6.0 per cent compared with 2011.

Most Provinces across the country are experiencing a decline in the overall crime rate, however, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Northwest Territories and Nunavut are exceptions. Nationally, violent criminal code offences accounted for 18.6 per cent of all crime instances.

Canadas overall crime rates have been declining for several years, but property offences have shown the biggest drop:

Nova Scotia's crime severity index fell 3.4 per cent in 2012, led by a 10.2 per cent drop in the violent crime severity index. The Crime Severity Index is down across most of the country, except for Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and the territories.

The clearance rate for crimes reported in Nova Scotia was 41.57, down from 42.14 in 2011. In 1998, the Nova Scotia clearance rate was 35.55. Clearance rates are weighted by severity of case cleared. Notably, clearance rates are higher in the territories, but lower in Quebec and British Columbia.
