The UK Office for National Statistics reported today that the unemployment rate for the three-month period November 2023 to January 2024, rose to 3.9%. This was up from the 3.8% compared to the same period a year ago.

There were 1.359 million unemployed people in the UK, 45,000 more than from a year earlier. Employment in the UK was at 33.175 million, 76,000 more compared to a year earlier. UK labour force increased by 120,000 over the past year.

Note: From 13 February 2024, ONS will be reinstating reweighted Labour Force Survey (LFS) estimates. The new reweighted LFS estimates incorporate the latest estimates of the size and composition of the UK population, improving the representativeness of the LFS estimates - these will replace the experimental estimates that have been published since October 2023.
