EU AND EURO AREA TRADE BALANCE IN GOODS, DECEMBER AND ANNUAL 2023

Month-over-month (December 2023 vs November 2023, seasonally adjusted)

In the 27 countries of the European Union, the balance of trade in goods surplus narrowed from €13.7 billion in November to €10.1 billion in December 2023. Exports from the European Union were down 0.8% to €210.8 billion while imports rose by 1.0% to €200.7 billion.

 

In the 20 countries of the Euro Area, the balance of trade in goods surplus narrowed to €13.0 billion in December 2023 from €15.1 billion in the previous month. Exports from the Euro Area fell by 0.8% to €234.3 billion while imports increased by 0.03% to €221.3 billion.

 

The European Union continued to run consistent surpluses in goods trade with the UK (€14.2 billion), Canada (€1.7 billion) and the US (€12.2 billion).

 

Likewise, for the subset of European Union countries that use the Euro, there was a goods trade surplus with the UK (€11.7 billion), Canada (€1.1 billion) and the US (€10.8 billion).

 

ANNUAL (2023 vs 2022)

The European Union's goods trade with the rest of the word recorded a surplus of €33.2 billion. European Union exports declined 0.04% to €2,551.8 billion and imports declined 16.0% to €2,518.6 billion.

The Euro Area's goods trade with the rest of the word recorded a surplus of €58.6 billion. Euro Area exports declined 0.6% to €2,838.5 billion and imports decreased 13.1% to €2,779.9 billion.
