US RETAIL SALES, JANUARY 2024

Month over month (January 2024 vs December 2023, seasonally adjusted)

The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales decreased 0.8%. Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales decreased 1.1%. Food service and drinking place receipts increased 0.7%.

 

Year-over-year (January 2023 vs January 2022, seasonally adjusted)

US retail trade and food services increased 0.6%. Retail trade decreased 0.2% and food services and drinking places sales increased 6.3%.

 

In percentage terms, sales were down in 7 of 12 retail categories, the largest decline (in percentage terms) was seen in furniture while the fastest gain was in health and personal care stores and non-store retailers.
