In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force increased 10,300 (+1.9%) to 549,900
  • Employment increased 3,700 (+0.7%) to 511,600
  • Unemployment increased 6,600 (+20.8%) to 38,300
  • Unemployment rate increased 1.1 percentage points to 7.0%


In Canada

  • Labour force increased 18,200 (+0.1%) to 21,586,900
  • Employment increased 37,300 (+0.2%) to 20,362,200
  • Unemployment decreased 19,200 (-1.5%) to 1,224,600
  • Unemployment rate decreased 0.1 percentage points to 5.7%


In Halifax,  (3-month moving average) 

  • Labour force increased 3,400 (+1.2%) to 287,100
  • Employment increased 2,800 (+1.0%) to 272,200
  • Unemployment increased 600 (+4.2) to 14,900
  • Unemployment rate increased 0.2 percentage points to 5.2%

 

YEAR OVER YEAR (January 2024 vs January 2023)


In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force increased 22,800 (+4.3%)
  • Employment increased 12,900 (+2.6%)
  • Unemployment increased 9,900 (+34.9%)
  • Unemployment rate increased 1.6 percentage points

In Canada

  • Labour force increased 514,700 (+2.4%)
  • Employment increased 345,200 (+1.7%)
  • Unemployment increased 169,300 (+16.0%)
  • Unemployment rate increased 0.7 percentage points


In Halifax,  (3-month moving average) 

  • Labour force increased 13,900 (+5.1%)
  • Employment increased 11,600 (+4.5%)
  • Unemployment increased 2,300 (+18.3%)
  • Unemployment rate increased 0.6 percentage points
