LABOUR FORCE SURVEY - SEPTEMBER 2017

In Nova Scotia September 2017 (seasonally-adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force increased 0.7% (+3,400) from August 2017 to 491,200 and increased 1.7% (+8,300) over September 2016.
  • Employment increased 0.5% (+2,300) from August  2017 to 446,900 and increased 0.7% (+3,100) over September 2016.
  • Unemployment increased 2.5% (+1,100) from August 2017 to 44,300 and increased 13.6% (+5,300) over September 2016.
  • Unemployment rate increased 0.1 percentage points from August 2017 to 9.0%.


In Canada September 2017 (seasonally-adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force was virtually unchanged  (-2,600) from August 2017 to 19.7 million and increased 0.9% (+172,900) over September 2016.
  • Employment increased 0.1% (+10,000) from August 2017 to 18.5 million and increased 1.8% (+319,700) over September 2016.
  • Unemployment decreased -1.0% (-12,500) from August 2017 to 1.2 million and decreased 10.8% (-146,700) over September 2016.
  • Unemployment rate was unchanged from August 2017 at 6.2%.


In Halifax September 2017 (3 month moving average, seasonally-adjusted):

  • Labour force increased 0.3% (+700) from August 2017 at 241,500 and increased 0.3% (+700) over September 2016.
  • Employment increased 0.1% (+300) from August 2017 to 224,000 and decreased 1.3% (-2,900) over September 2016.
  • Unemployment increased 1.7% (+300) from August 2017 to 17,500 and increased 25.9% (+3,600) over September 2016.
  • Unemployment rate increased 0.1 percentage points from August 2017 to 7.2%.
