Inflation in Japan was 0.4 per cent between August 2016 and August 2017. All items CPI inflation had been 0.5 per cent in July. Excluding food and energy, Japanese prices are still declining, with the underlying index down 0.2 per cent on a year-over-year basis in August.
As oil prices have recovered from the lows of early 2016, energy inflation is rising again - up 6.9 per cent compared with August 2016. Food price inflation continues to be modest, at 0.6 per cent year-over-year in August.
Japanese inflation has been persistently below inflation reported in Canada and Nova Scotia for much of the last two years. Stabilizing energy prices are a global phenomenon and with it, inflation is returning across many advanced economies. However, Japan's inflation remains lower than the growth of the CPI in either Canada or Nova Scotia.
