Year-to-Date (January-June 2017 vs. January-June 2016)- All merchandise
In Jan-Jun 2017, Nova Scotia merchandise trade exports increased $64.1 million to $2.704 billion over Jan-Jun 2016. This is a recent high, but not quite the all time high of $2.888 billion in Jan-Jun 2014, or the high point in Jan-Jun 2008 ($2.775 billion) before the slump 2009 to 2013.
YTD - By Sector
In Nova Scotia for January-June 2017, merchandise exports grew 2.4 per cent or $64.1 million compared to the same months in 2016. The largest dollar value increase were in consumer goods (+$74.4 million), metal/mineral products (+$40.2 million), and forestry products (+$18.7 million). Energy products declined $42.9 million compared to the first half of 2016.
On a year-to-date basis, exports values increased in:
Metal and non-metallic mineral products by 32.6% ($40.2 million) to $163.4 million
Consumer goods by 11.7% ($74.4 million) to $708.6 million
Forestry products and building and packaging materials by 6.4% ($18.7 million) to $309.4 million
Basic and industrial chemical, plastic and rubber products by 1.9% ($3.1 million) to $165.1 million
Motor vehicles and parts by 1.1% ($7.1 million) to $648.5 million
On a year-to-date basis, exports values decreased in:
Energy products by 83.8% (-$42.9 million) to $8.3 million
Metal ores and non-metallic minerals by 26.0%(-$8.1 million) to $23.1 million
Electronic and electrical equipment and parts by 15.6% (-$13.5 million) to $72.9 million
Aircraft and other transportation equipment and parts by 12.9% (-$4.4 million) to $29.6 million
Industrial machinery, equipment and parts by 6.1% (-$3.6 million) to $55.3 million
Farm, fishing and intermediate food products by 1.1% ($-5.4 million) to $490.5 million
YTD by Province
In Jan-Jun 2017, Alberta ranked first among the provinces in growth of domestic exports. Year-to-date exports increased 42.7 per cent over the same period last year. Canadian year to date exports are up 12.5 per cent.
In Jan-Jun 2017, Nova Scotia ranked eight among the provinces in growth of domestic exports. Year-to-date exports increased 2.4 per cent over the same period last year.
Non-energy exports have increased 4.1 per cent in Nova Scotia comparing January-June 2017 with January-June 2016. Canada non-energy exports have grown 4.5 per cent during this period.
