MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, MAY 2017

 Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia’s seasonally adjusted manufacturing shipments increased 3.7% in May 2017 to $690.2 million, and decreased 0.3% over May 2016.

For the first five months of the year (January-May), seasonally adjusted manufacturing shipments are 0.3% higher in 2017 than in 2016.

Unadjusted year-to-date (Jan-May)

  • non-durable shipments account for 65% of manufacturing shipments in 2017 and increased 0.1% over the same period last year.
  • Food manufacturing, with a 28% share, are down 4.9%,
  • Beverages and tobacco, with a 2% share, are up 0.6%, and
  • Plastic and rubber, with a 21% share, are up 6.3% over the same period last year.
  • durable goods manufacturing accounts for 35% of shipments in 2017, increased 0.4%.
  • Wood products, with a 6% share, are up 2.9%,
  • Non-metallic mineral products, with a 2% share, are up 12.3%, 
  • Fabricated metal products, with a 4% share, are down 1.7%,
  • Machinery products, with a 2% share, are down 11.6%,
  • Computer and electronics, with a 2% share, are down 16.7% and
  • Transportation Equipment, with a 16% share, are up 5.1% over the same period last year.

 

Canada

Canada manufacturing sales were up 1.1% to $54.6 billion in May 2017, and up 8.7% above last year. Compared to April 2017, overall sales were up in 16 of 21 industries as durable goods increased 2.2% and non-durable goods declined 0.3%.

The sales increase was led by gains of 4.2% in the Transportation Equipment industry and 2.4% in Chemical Manufacturing. These were partially offset by a decline of 3.4% in the Petroleum and Coal Product industry.

Inventory levels decreased 0.2% in May 2017 following five consecutive months of increase. Unfilled orders fell 1.5% to $89.1 billion, and new orders fell 3.6% to $53.3 billion over April 2017.

 

Provinces

Manufacturing sales were up in six provinces in May 2017.  Nova Scotia, at +3.7%, ranked 1st in percentage growth.

 

On a year-over-year basis (seasonally adjusted), manufacturing shipments are up 8.7% in Canada, with all provinces, except Prince Edward Island and Nova scotia, recording positive year-over-year growth. Newfoundland (+29.0%) and Alberta (+18.4%) led the way. 

On a year-to-date basis, manufacturing shipments growth (unadjusted) was positive in Canada (+6.6%), with large gains in Newfoundland (+26.7%), and double digit gains in New Brunswick (+10.9%), Saskatchewan (+13.2%) and Alberta (+16.9%). Nova Scotia (+0.2%) ranked 10th.
