In Nova Scotia in April 2017 retail sales (seasonally adjusted) decreased 0.2% from March 2017 to $1.3 billion and increased 5.0% over April 2016.
In Canada in April 2017 retail sales (seasonally adjusted) increased 0.8% from March 2017 to $48.6 billion and increased 7.0% over April 2016.
Sectors
In Jan-Apr 2017, Nova Scotia unadjusted retail sales increased 3.2% ($136 million) over Jan-Apr 2016.
- Gas Stations, responsible for 14% of retail sales, increased $97.6 million (+19.5%),
- Health care stores: 9% of retail sales increased $21.6 million (+5.9%),
- General merchandise: 12% of retail sales increased $20.3 million (+4.1%)
- Misc. retail: 2% of retail sales increased $9.5 million (+11.5%).
- Building Materials: 6% of retail sales increased $9.2 million (+3.7%),
- Electronic stores: 1% of retail sales increased $1.9 million (+3.4%). and
- Sporting & Hobby: 2% of retail sales increased $0.8 million (+1.1%).
- Food and beverage stores, responsible for 23% of retail sales, declined $10.3 million (-1.0%),
- Motor vehicle stores: 26% of retail sales declined $8.7 million (-0.8%),
- Clothing stores: 3% of retail sales declined $5.8 million (-3.8%), and
- Furniture stores: 2% of retail sales declined $0.2 million (-0.2%).
Canada and the Provinces
Seven of 10 provinces reported positive month-over-month (April 2017 vs March 2017) seasonally adjusted retail sales growth. Three provinces reported negative growth: Newfoundland (-0.1%), Nova Scotia (-0.2%, ranked 9th) and Saskatchewan (-4.1%). Canada reported +0.8% growth.
All provinces reported positive year-over year (Apr 2017 over Apr 2016) seasonally adjusted retail sales growth. Prince Edward Island led the way at +9.6%. Nova Scotia (+5.0%) ranked eighth. Canada reported +7.0% growth.
All provinces reported positive year-to-date (Jan-Apr 2017 over Jan-Apr 2016) seasonally adjusted retail sales growth. Prince Edward Island led the way at +9.2%. Nova Scotia (+4.2%) ranked seventh. Canada reported +6.5% growth.
