WHOLESALE TRADE, APRIL 2017

In Nova Scotia April 2017, on a seasonally adjusted basis month-over-month wholesale sales increased 3.3 per cent to $837.6 million.   On a year-over-year basis, wholesale sales were 11.2 per cent higher over April 2016.  On a year-to-date basis wholesale sales were 7.2% higher than the same period last year.

In Canada April 2017, on a seasonally adjusted basis month-over-month wholesale sales increased 1.0 per cent to $61.0 billion.  Sales were up in three of seven sectors. In Machine and equipment were up 7.3% to $12.4 billion. Food and beverage were up 1.5% to $11.8 billion, and Motor vehicle and parts were down 1.7% to $11.3 billion.

By Province

In month-over-month seasonally adjusted wholesale sales, Nova Scotia (+3.3%) ranked 3rd. Manitoba and Saskatchewan led the way with sales increasing 5.4%. Seven of ten provinces reported positive growth, while Newfoundland and Labrador (-36.3%) recorded a decline.

On a year-over-year basis, Nova Scotia (+11.2%) ranked 4th in percentage growth. Prince Edward Island led the way with  growth in sales increasing 13.2% over April 2016. Only Newfoundland and Labrador (-23.1%) recorded negative year-over-year growth.

On a year-to-date basis, Nova Scotia (+7.2%) ranked 7th. British Columbia recorded sales growth at 10.1% over the same period last year. Nine of ten provinces recordied positive growth, while New Brunswick (-0.2%) was the only province recording a decline.

 

 

  

Nova Scotia  Sectors

Unadjusted wholesale sales in Nova Scotia increased by $176 million or by 6.3% per cent compared to Jan-Apr 2016. The dollar increase was largely accounted for by three subsectors: Food, beverage and tobacco wholesalers (+$114 million); building material and supplies wholesalers (+$55 million), and Machinery/equipment ($30 million). Only one subsector had a decline: miscellaneous wholesalers declined $43 million compared to the same period last year

  

 

Statistics Canada Quotes

In Nova Scotia, sales grew 3.3% to $838 million, a second consecutive gain. The food, beverage and tobacco
subsector and the building material and supplies subsector contributed the most to the gain.

Newfoundland and Labrador recorded its first decline in three months, with sales dropping 36.3% to $308 million,
more than offsetting a 28.0% gain in March. The miscellaneous subsector was the largest contributor to the
decrease.
