MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, APRIL 2017

 Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia’s seasonally adjusted manufacturing shipments increased 0.3% in April 2017 to $671.9 million, and increased 3.6% over April 2016.

For the first four months of the year (January-April), seasonally adjusted manufacturing shipments are 0.7% higher in 2017 than in 2016.

Unadjusted year-to-date (Jan-Apr)

  • non-durable shipments  account for 66% of manufacturing shipments in 2017 and increased 1.0% over the same period last year.
  • Food manufacturing, with a 28% share, was down 1.1%,
  • Beverages and tobacco, with a 2% share, are up 0.9%, and
  • Plastic and rubber, with a 21% share, are up 3.0% over the same period last year.
  • durable goods manufacturing accounts for 34% of shipments in 2017, contracted 1.7%.
  • Wood products, with a 6% share, are up 0.7%,
  • Non-metallic mineral products, with a 2% share, are up 14.0%, 
  • Fabricated metal products, with a 4% share, are down 4.1%,
  • Machinery products, with a 2% share, are down 7.4%,
  • Computer and electronics, with a 2% share, are down 20.6% and
  • Transportation Equipment, with a 16% share, are up 2.8% over the same period last year.

  

 

Canada

Canada manufacturing sales were up 1.1% to $54.4 billion in April 2017, and up 7.6% above last year. Compared to March 2017, overall sales were up in 13 of 21 industries as durable goods increased 0.3% and non-durable goods increased 2.0%.

Sales increased 8.9% in Petroleum and Coal products and Primary metal products were up 3.8%. Paper Industries increased (+3.5%), as well as Food industries (+0.5%) and Machinery (+1.5%). Transportation equipment was down -1.3% over last month.

Inventory levels increased 0.9% in April 2017 for a fifth consecutive month. Unfilled orders were up 1.0% to $90.2 billion, and new orders were up 0.4%  to $55.3 billion over March 2017.

 

 

Provinces

Manufacturing sales were up in eight provinces in April 2017.  Nova Scotia, at +0.3%, ranked  7th in percentage growth.

 

On a year-over-year basis (seasonally adjusted), manufacturing shipments are up 7.6% in Canada, with all provinces, except Manitoba, recording positive year-over-year growth. Newfoundland (+25.6%) and Prince Edward Island (+17.5%) led the way. 

On a year-to-date basis, manufacturing shipments growth (unadjusted) was positive in Canada (+5.4%), with large gains in Newfoundland (+27.4%), and double digit gains in New Brunswick (+13.0%), Prince Edward Island (+10.3%), Saskatchewan (+13.6%) and Alberta (+14.9%). Nova Scotia (+0.1%) ranked 9th.
