In 2013, Nova Scotia the value of total trade (import plus exports) with New Brunswick was over $3.67 billion. More than two-thirds (67% or $2.41 billion) of this trade was in imports from New Brunswick and another 33% ($1.26 billion) in exports to New Brunswick.
Goods and Services
Rearranging the total trade components into goods and services reveals that 59% of Nova Scotia - New Brunswick trade is trade in goods, and 41% of trade in services.
In 2013 the value of Nova Scotia – New Brunswick services trade was $1.5 billion. Nova Scotia exported $640 million worth of services to New Brunswick and imported $881 million worth of services from New Brunswick.
In 2013, the value of Nova Scotia – New Brunswick goods trade was $2.2 billion. Nova Scotia exported $622 million worth of goods to New Brunswick and imported $1.53 billion worth of goods from New Brunswick.

GOODS
In 2013 Nova Scotia exported $622 million worth of goods to New Brunswick.
In Nova Scotia 2013, the top goods export to New Brunswick in 2013 was Fish. Total value was $165 million and represent 27% of total goods exports. The number two goods commodity was Gasoline, valued at $78 million and represented 13% of total goods exports to New Brunswick. Together they account for $243 million or 40% of Nova Scotia goods exports to New Brunswick.
The next five commodities, represent 29% of total goods exports. Together they are valued at $156 million. They are, 1) Animal feed, 2) Lubricants, 3) Fruit and vegetable juices, 4) Forestry support services, and 5) Mining support services.
The top 25 goods commodities total $554.1 million and represent 89.1% of Nova Scotia’s goods exports to New Brunswick.
SERVICES
In 2013 Nova Scotia exported $639 million worth of services to New Brunswick.
Wholesale margins (20%, $129.4 million), Retail margins (12%, $76.6 million), and Prepared meals (5%, $33.6 million) are the top three service exports from Nova Scotia to New Brunswick. Together they total $239.6 million or $38% of total service exports.
The next six services (Room or unit accommodation services for travellers, Head office services, Management, scientific and technical consulting services, Hospital services, Amusement and recreation services, and Tuition and similar fees for universities) total $125.4 million and account for 20% of services exports.
Together the top 25 service exports to New Brunswick account for 80% of service exports valued at $514 million.
Nova Scotia – New Brunswick: Imports
GOODS
In 2013 Nova Scotia imported $1.5 billion worth of goods from New Brunswick.
The top good Nova Scotia import from New Brunswick in 2013 was Diesel and biodiesel fuels, valued at $235 million, and accounting for 15% of total goods imports.
The next four goods imports were Light fuel oils (9%, $134 million), Wood chips (5%, $71 million), Other animal feed (4%, $62 million), and Milk products (4%, $56 million).
The next five were Prefab (3%, $50 million), Asphalt (3%, $45 million), Gasoline (3%, $42 million), Pork (3%, $39 million), and Snack food (3%, $38 million).
Together, the top eleven goods products total $809 million, or 51% of total goods imports.
The top 25 goods imports account for 75% of trade and $1.14 billion.
SERVICES
In 2013 Nova Scotia imported $881 billion worth of services from New Brunswick.
Wholesale ($183 million) is the lead service commodity accounting for 21% of Nova Scotia imports of services from New Brunswick.
The next three services account for 27% ($235 million) of services imports from New Brunswick – Office services (13%, $113 million); Gaming (7%, $63 million); and Specialized Freight (6%, $57 million).
The top four account for 47% ($418 million) of services imports from New Brunswick.
The top 25 services commodities total $762 million and represent 86% of Nova Scotia's services imports from New Brunswick.
