CANADA GDP BY INDUSTRY, MARCH 2017

Real GDP in Canada increased 0.5 per cent in March 2017, after a month of flat growth in February.  

Output of goods-producing industries increased 0.9 per cent in March. Among goods-producing industries, GDP increased in Manufacturing (+1.6%), utilities (+1.6%), construction (+0.8%), while and agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting (-0.4%) showed a decline.

GDP in service-producing industries increased 0.3 per cent in March. The largest growth in service-producing industries was in retail trade (+1.0%), followed by the finance and insurance sector (+0.8%), wholesale trade (+0.7%), and arts, entertainment and recreation (+0.6%).

Comparing year to date (January - March) 2017 to the same period in 2016, the Canadian economy is 2.6 per cent larger this year than last.

Goods production is up 2.8 percent with increases in mining, quarrying and gas extraction (+6.8%), manufacturing (+2.2%), utilities (+2.2%), and in construction (+0.4%). Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting is down in year to date terms by 0.2 per cent. 

GDP for service-producing industries is up 2.5 per cent on increases in all subsectors except management of companies and enterprises (-1.8%), administration and support (-0.1%), and a 0.2 per cent decline in "other services."
