WHOLESALE TRADE, MARCH 2017

In Nova Scotia March 2017, on a seasonally adjusted basis month-over-month wholesale sales increased 1.8 per cent to $807.8 million.   On a year-over-year basis, wholesale sales were 6.6 per cent higher over March 2016.  On a year-to-date basis wholesale sales were 5.7% higher than the same period last year.

In Canada March 2017, on a seasonally adjusted basis month-over-month wholesale sales increased 0.9 per cent to $60.2 billion.  Sales were up in four of seven sectors representing 60% of total sales. In Building material, sales reached a record high of $8.4 billion. On a year-over-year basis, wholesale sales were up 10.2 per cent  over March 2016.  On a year-to-date basis wholesale sales were 7.7% higher than the same period last year.

 

 

By Province

In month-over-month seasonally adjusted wholesale sales, Nova Scotia (+1.8%) ranked 4th. Newfoundland and Labrador led the way with sales increasing 29.3%. Nine of ten provinces reported positive growth, while Manitoba (-0.1%) recorded a decline.

On a year-over-year basis, Nova Scotia (+6.6%) ranked 8th in percentage growth. Newfoundland and Labrador led the way with  growth in sales increasing 41.8% over March 2016. All provinces recorded positive year-over-year growth.

On a year-to-date basis, Nova Scotia (+5.7%) ranked 7th. Newfoundland and Labrador recorded sales growth at 21.5% over the same period last year. Nine of ten provinces recordied positive growth, while New Brunswick (-0.3%) was the only province recording a decline.

 

 

 

 

Nova Scotia  Sectors

Unadjusted wholesale sales in Nova Scotia increased by $121.8 million or by 5.9% per cent compared to Jan-Mar 2016. The dollar increase was largely accounted for by the three largest subsectors: food, beverage and tobacco wholesalers (+$65.1 million); building material and supplies wholesalers (+$38.9 million), and Machinery/equipment ($25.2 million). Only one subsector had a decline: miscellaneous wholesalers declined $23.5 million compared to the same period last year
